When I photographed my 82-year-old mother for this piece, I initially asked her to show me the face of stoicism, a disposition that Japanese women were famous for. She could not make that expression. I then asked her to show confidence. Again, she was at a loss. She could only smile in front of a camera.
I later realized my photos had captured her charm, which was her delightful presence. My father loved her because of that, and my stepfather adores her for the same reason. Mother will probably hate to see her image with wrinkles, unfit dentures, and a ridiculously large bouquet on the head, but I hope this bust has successfully portrayed her ageless strength and beauty.
