The passenger pigeons represent vulnerabilities on the earth. Billions of them used to migrate across North America. They were so many that no one foresaw that humans (hunting and deforestation) could drive them to the extinction. By the time people realized the significant decline in the numbers, the species that needed vast numbers to sustain itself could no longer thrive. In the sculpture, the woman is caring for the vulnerable. Hearten by her goodness, the birds are now incubating an egg (the future).
Caring is the core of our strength to fight for what is right. It is possible to make a difference in a matter we care about.
